Backwell Ath Vets vs Red Star 35s

Backwell Ath Vets Report:

A really good game played in the Corninthian spirit. Both teams played some good football and tried to keep the ball moving in muddy conditions.
Backwell probably edged the possession and attacking stats and this finally told as we went 1-0 up in the first half.
Another Backwell goal soon after half time gave us some breathing space but Red Star kept going and made the game really competitive. Finally they won a penalty in the last ten minutes which was  dispatched with aplomb and set up a grand stand finish which the huge crowd of a couple of kids and a bloke and his dog thoroughly enjoyed.

Red Star 35s Report:

The last game before the 2nd lockdown, which was played in a VERY CORINTHIAN yet competitive spirit by both sides. Backwell played some great football and took a 2-0 lead with Red Star also playing well and fighting back as the game went on. The game was also brilliantly reffed which only added to the enjoyment of this high quality, competitive and very corinthian game of football as we all brace ourselves for another lockdown and no team sports for a while. Bristol Pigeons vs Dynamos

Dynamos 3rd league game of the season saw us face Bristol Pigeons at SBL. Pigeons started the brighter of the two sides, however we scored the first goal early on with a neat finish from Mike Hope. Pigeons began to dominate the midfield as Dynamos struggled to cope with their extra man in the middle. Craig and Matt putting in a great shift to try and break up play. An injury to Capes at the end of the first half led to Craig dropping into centre back until half time. Pigeons were on top at this point and an equaliser seemed inevitable.

Half time game Dynamos the opportunity to reshuffle and Joe, who’d only come to watch from sidelines, was persuaded (bullied?) into getting kitted up and fill in at centre back. Adam dropped back from centre forward to help in midfield. The second half was more even, Pigeons still enjoying possession but struggling to find the killer pass. The second goal in the game was always going to be key and it went to Dynamos, a fine finish on the half volley from Matt Vaughan. This appeared to knock Pigeons and Joe Parsons was able to add a third. Pigeons didn’t give up and got the goal they deserved as the game reached it’s closing stages.

Thanks to Pigeons for a hard fought game before we all go into hibernation for a month (hopefully!)

Henleaze Corinthians vs Shine Sports

On a windy Fry’s show pitch Corries and Shine played out a 9 goal thriller. Both teams had a steady start but it was Corries who took the early lead. Chris latching onto onto a through ball to then lob the keeper. Corries began to play some good flowing football and eventually increased their advantage when debutant Josh fired home. Against the run of play Shine pulled a goal back when a speculative hoof/cross somehow managed to make a fool of Mike in goal as he flapped away.

So 2-1 at half time.

Corries came out in the second half and began to dominate and increased their lead with some excellent build up play and finishing from firstly Kaine, then Tahir to make the score 4-1. Corries then subconsciously decided to attack attack attack, which subsequently backfired drastically. In a poor 15 mins, firstly Matty gave away a penalty for handball (30% unlucky), which Shine dispatched. Then a wind assisted ball over the top wasn’t dealt with (Tom D) and Shine were back to 4-3. Then Tom D gave away a contentious penalty for what can only be described as a slight shoulder barge (99.99% unlucky) which somehow the ref gave. (I think he had been watching the adjoining under 10’s match and applied primary school football logic). Shine dispatched the kick and Corries had somehow let a 4-1 lead slip and it was now 4-4 with 20 minutes to go.

Corries began to try and play some football again and with 10 mins to go nicked a (probably deserved winner) when Josh grabbed his second. The whistle went and Corries grabbed the 3 points. All in all the game was played in great Corinthian spirit. Roll on the next game whenever that may be…….!

Fry Club Vets vs Yate Town Vets

Yate Town ran out victors in a game where a draw may of been a fairer result. The away side took the lead through a splendid 30 yard finish during the first half catching the Fry’s keeper unawares. Fry Club took control of the second period and were unfortunate to not level the scoring. Yate killed the game with two late finishes before Marc Richards picking up a well taken consolation effort in added time.

An evenly contested game overall and well refereed in the morning sunshine

From Away side

3 -1 victory for Yate Town away At Frys with the wind in our favour we took a 20 minute lead with a long range effort which took the keeper by surprise. Taking this lead into half time. The tide did change second half and frys had the lion share of play with a couple of half chances and long range efforts. But on the counter and against the run of play we manage to score two breakaway goals. Frys scored the final goal of the game after good play by their winger who beat a few players before nicely slotting the ball home into the bottom corner.

Overall was a perfect autumn morning on a cracking pitch with great facilities. With a great friendly welcome. Was great to see old friends.

Real Madras vs Recliners FC

Recliners report:

A well contested match between two closely matched teams, where the difference was mainly in the quality of the finishing. Recliners made a slow start and twice allowed Madras players time and space in the box due to poor marking, both of which were punished by clinical finishes. Recliners then got on top and a superb move ended with Gaffers notching his first ever goal for the franchise. 2-1 HT. The pattern was similar in the second half, Recliners with the bulk of the possession but Madras looking dangerous on the break. A sweetly struck direct free kick sealed the game for them and although we came close, hitting the woodwork a couple of times and bringing some tidy saves from the Madras keeper, the result never looked in doubt. Game was played in good spirit barring one disappointing incident which resulted in a Madras player being asked to leave the field. We tried our best to have a drink together after  but of course the dreaded Covid meant we had to sit at different tables in the pub and weren’t even allowed to speak to each other! We look forward to the return game.

Real Madras report:

A game that could have gone either way. Real Madras started the first half on the front foot going 2-0 up and then recliners clawed there way back into the game as the half went on and eventually getting a goal there play deserved. The Second half was almost a replica of the first with Real on top in the early stages of the half and scoring from a free kick which hit the cross bar and came off the keeper and went in. Recliners pushed forward to get themselves back into the game, only for Madras Keeper to make some keys save at crucial points in the half. The less said the better about the incident in the second half. I apologise on behalf of the club and this will be dealt with internally.  Thanks Mike for sorting out a pitch and the referee for a game that was technically our home match. I had to make a quick exit yesterday as it was my wife’s birthday. Hopefully we can all have a more sociable beer next time for the return game.

Rapid Dementia vs Barely Athletic

From the off lets not mention the missed penalty from Manager Gregory. It had no effect on the outcome of the match and so lets firmly draw a line under that unfortunate incident.

Rapid again had a full 16 for this game with only Super ‘Kevin Costner’ Fan Clive Slocombe puling out of the match at the last minute due to a confirmed sighting of the American actor at Peasedown St John.

Manager Gregory made use of squad rotation once again leaving some of the big guns, and small ones on the bench. Rapid once again started as they have most games, controlling the play but lacking that final cutting edge. The breakthrough finally came when Matt Curtis chased down a ball into the box and spasmed his way to prodding the ball home.

Barely continued to be very hard to break down and no further goals came until the second half.

Rapid continued to struggle to find a consistent pattern of play but two goals in quick succession from Jason Curtis and Sam Gurner gave Rapid a firm lead that never looked in trouble.

All in all a good day at the office and a very fair and enjoyable game, both sides showing good Corinthian spirit!

To be fair Rapid are a good young 45s team and played good football with great discipline.
For long periods Barely were pegged back but held firm. Only conceding 2 goals either side of half time. The first was well worked out the second was down to some sloppy defending.
After the break Barely pressed more but age and the big heavy pitch started to tell and again Rapid camped themselves in Barelys half. Some borderline challenges from Barely and great saves from Allan kept the score down but eventually Dave Harris tried mating with Rapids number 9 in the box (literally) and a penalty was given. But in the spirit of the game and under immense pressure from his own team mates the number 9 blazed over the bar. Rapid did eventually nick a third but by then Barely had ran out of ideas and legs.
Not a bad game and Barely will probably play worse and win!
