Red Star started brightly with a goal in the first 2 minutes. Nailsea lost possession in midfield and Red Star found their striker inside the box to drill home from 10 yards out. Not the best of starts but Nailsea regrouped and began to play some of the best football we’ve enjoyed for a long time. Nailsea dominance was soon rewarded. After 30 minutes Lee Cogan hit a looping cross / come shot from a narrow-angle on the left over the keepers head into the right side of the net. As Nailsea continued to dominate at least 4 golden opportunities went begging. Red Star struck against the run of play on the stroke of half time with a counterattack to make it 2-1.

Nailsea continued the second half in a similar fashion with a terrific display of neat passing to open up further chances. Red Star’s keeper was outstanding with two notable saves; one in particular that defied belief (a reminder of Jimmy Montgomery from the ’73 FA Cup final!) Once again, Nailsea’s dominance eventually paid dividends and an equalizer came on 80 minutes as Stu Kemble powered in a header from 6 yards out from a recycled corner.

In the last minute, Nailsea thought they’d nicked the win with a close-range shot from Lee Cogan that hit the post but it wasn’t to be. Final score 2-2. Nailsea were pleased to earn a point after a very good display but went away to consider what may have been had so many chances not gone begging.

Nailsea withdrew 1 player for 20 minutes to calm down following an altercation, after which the game continued to be played in a competitive but Corinthian spirit

RedStar unable to raise a full team due to 45s cup semi final and no alternate date available. The game is declared a no-fault 0-0 draw and will be played as a friendly.

….though sports fans will want to know Red Star won the friendly 2-1 with a ‘once in a career’ powerful header from their player-manager. Well played all, football most definitely the winner.

Red Star Match Report

An fairly even first half on a muddy Saltford pitch. Things turned rapidly in Red Star’s favour in the second with a steady flow of goals. Reunion fought back admirably to pull a couple back, but Red Star held their nerve to emerge victorious. Special mention for Tahir with his second 5 goal haul (haal) in two games. Thanks to Reunion for making it an enjoyable game and for recruiting the ref.

A curious game for Red Star who lost the initiative early on and never really managed to find their way again. The real winners here were the barn door preservation society, as the Russell goal, supremely well protected by their loan keeper, seemed immune to almost all of Red Star’s attacking intent.

Plenty of drama and goals for the neutral though and glorious conditions for an autumn game. Definitely a victory for Corinthian-ism as, faced with initial selection issues, both teams and Mike Akers from the league worked together through the week to get two teams out and the game on. Big thanks to Henleaze who stepped in to make up the numbers and a fine demonstration of the great inter club spirit in the league. Credit to Russell Athletic for an accomplished performance and some lethal finishing, particularly on the break when Red Star were chasing the game.

RED STAR MATCH REPORT

A very competitive and close fought game. Goalless at half-time despite chances for both teams and some quality saves from the Chew keeper, the visitors edged ahead via the penalty spot and then doubled their lead shortly after. Red Star came back into it with their own penalty and were just building a head of steam when Chew added a third. Still Red Star continued to throw everything at it and good chances went narrowly astray. Red Star pulled one back with a stooping header from a corner at the very death, but they were out of time and out of luck. Good game in some welcome if blustery spring weather, thanks to Chew for playing their part well.

Chew Magna Match Report

These are two well matched teams and another close fought game, played in good spirt ended with Chew holding out for the win. The first half was a tight battle with Red Star on the balance on top but Chew dug in and kept it to scoreless thanks to some resolute defending and excellent saves from Keen in goal. Chew started the second half strongly increasing the pressure on the Red Star goal, and were reward with a penalty which Lewis calmly dispatched. Cornelius on the left wing was firing in a succession of wicked in-swinging corners and these paid dividends when Fisher scored with a lovely header at the far post. Red star fought back and won their own penalty and with the score now 2-1 pushed for the equaliser. Chew dug in and were glad as time ran out to see Lewis seal the game with a third.

However Red Star weren’t done and after winning a corner scored for the second time against Chew with the last kick of the game. However it was too late and Chew celebrated the win. It was great to see both teams sitting outside the clubhouse enjoying a few beers in the sunshine after the game.
