Decliners FC vs Russell Athletic 50s

Decliners finally won a first game this season, despite making yet another catastrophic start when the ball was given away after five minutes straight to the Russell striker who trotted through to score. Not disheartened, Decliners proceeded to take firm control of the game and equalized when Kempo headed in a great cross from Gary at the back stick. Several good chances were missed before a wicked corner from Jonny caused confusion in the Russell backline and the ball skimmed off a defender into the net. In the second half it was more of the same. Decliners playing good football, creating decent chances and missing them. Jonny got his second when he lobbed the keeper as several players inexplicably stopped. This was a good game played to a high Corinthian standard.

Nailsea Vets 50s vs Chew Magna 50s

Nailsea were keen to bounce back against Chew after the narrow cup defeat two weeks ago. On this occasion, Nailsea bossed much of the play and after 12 minutes Lee Cogan was in a position to open the scoring. Christian floated an accurate cross to Cookie on the left side of the penalty box who in turn found Lee who poked in from 8 yards out.  Despite creating several chances (including a bullet-free kick from Christian brilliantly saved by the Chew keeper) Nailsea couldn’t convert further, and the score remained 1-0 at half-time.

The second half continued in a similar fashion and Nailsea threatened a second but were always wary of Chew on the break. Gazza in goal for Nailsea made a great stop low to his right to deny Chew. Shortly after at 60 minutes, Lee took advantage of a mix-up in the Chew defense and fired low to the keeper’s right to notch his second

Several other chances went begging for Nailsea but a 2-0 final score provided some consolation for the cup defeat.

Thanks to Chew for allowing an under-age keeper for Nailsea. He made one great stop but was reasonably untroubled for much of the game.

Decliners FC vs Easton Monday 95

A few late drop outs meant Decliners faced the Mighty Monday with a skeleton squad of 13. However we gave them a good run for their money and it proved to be a close, competitive match. A worldy from Gaffers for our goal. Good luck Monday for the run in.

MONDAY MATCH REPORT

The pre-match planning on how to cope with the infamous BAWA slope went in the bin as the 95ers discovered they were playing on a much flatter if no less bumpy pitch on this chilly but dry Sunday morning. The officious referee laid down the law on the removal of all jewellery (for health and safety reasons) much to the frustration of Morgs who struggled to remove his ‘dandyish’ pro- footballer-inspired ear studs. At his post-match press conference Morgs told waiting reporters… “Having recently adopted a true Sunday League veteran’s pre-match regimen that now includes no less than 1 double espresso, a 400 cal protein/carb shake, half a slice of toast and two bananas, followed by 2 pints of water in the car en route to the pitch, and lightly finished off with a single high caffeine pill for good measure, I felt more than ready for any goal scoring opportunities that this vital league fixture might present on the day.”

Unfortunately someone forgot to tell him that he had to hit the target or beat the keeper to actually score. Within minutes of the opening whistle, he’d stung their keeper’s hands at least twice, maybe three… and had each effort pushed outside the post, much to his wild-eyed, caffeine induced surprise.

Centre-back Jim Philpott later told reporters… “We started reasonably well, maybe a bit slow to the ball. Getting the ball down to pass seemed a big ask.” Striker Sheridan adding… “From the off it was clear the Mondays had a few post Xmas cobwebs to clear plus contending with the pitch and a committed Decliners team.”

The deadlock was broken when Decliners took the lead with a ‘worldy’ from about 35 yards leaving Sir Lee in the Monday goal stranded as the ball sailed over his head sneaking in just under the bar and into the net.

Despite the set-back, the Monday continued to probe forward and earned an equaliser thanks to an unfortunate goal-keeping error (no doubt helped by the bobbly nature of the pitch) which saw the ball ‘jump’ over the Decliner goalies’ hands leaving Morgs with easiest of tap-ins from an inch out. A finish Blazer Sheridan might have adopted later on in the game.

This, as Morgs and the rest of the Monday strike force discovered, would be the only error their otherwise excellent keeper made all morning.

As Monday utility player Alex Orozco noted in his post-match interview… “From that moment on we started to show a higher level of fitness. Dudds and Yinka kept the running going all match against a decent midfield.”

This lead to the 95ers best spell and played a bit of football, taking the lead with a rare decent team move.

Morgs, having reasonable sight of goal took the whole team by surprise when he clearly lost his head and uncharacteristically laid off a pass to Draner just inside the box whose shot was placed in the bottom corner.

A few more half chances went begging, a header from a corner from Jim and an overhead kick from Morgs as the striker himself described to his fans on Instagram… “Tme suddenly appeared to stand still as a nicely weighted cross was lofted into the box from the right wing. In what seemed like about 15 seconds of deliberation in my head, I made a decision to attempt the impossible; the vaunted overhead kick perfected by Rooney, Ronaldo and others. Heaving my still jittery limbs skyward, I somehow managed to connect foot to ball, whacking it goalwards and looping menacingly to the left top corner. Or so I thought. In reality, I only managed what would appear to anyone on the sidelines as a meagre half volley, with the ball falling laughably short of the goal and the keeper simply strolling out two yards and collecting it before distributing it to a bemused Decliners defender.”

The introduction of Sheri at half time gave the attack a Kane like fulcrum, and the 95ers looked dangerous, creating frequent chances but frustratingly finding a variety of ways to not score that included missing the target from close range and shooting directly into the keepers face. Sheri’s tidy touch and approach play outside of the box was mysteriously reversed when entering the penalty area, the highlight being a 50 cm roll-over-the-line-tap-in being somehow miss hit to allow a defender to hack the slow rolling ball clear.

As Philpott observed… “Second half we were rubbish but we defended well, marshalled by a dominant Neil, we kept them at bay whilst under constant pressure.”

Left back Rance added… “I overheard Neil yelling with perverse delight that “THIS IS JUST HOW I REMEMBER THE DOWNS LEAGUE 40 YEARS AGO!” No doubt ‘International’ Steve Jones (recovering at home from a recent heart attack) would have endorsed.

Orozco added… “Our defence dealt strongly with a constant charge that failed to produce any decent chances for them. Neil was particularly vociferous and commanding across the back four.”

Any half chances Decliners created were skilfully dealt with by the ever-commanding presence of Sir Lee in the Monday goal. The last twenty minutes was end to end with Decliners looking for an equaliser and 95ers the clincher.

Monday needed a third to settle the nerves of the onlooking Chairman (running the line) and it came in the final minutes after great work from Draner and a ball across the goal which Duds smashed in.

Rance later told reporters… “The least I say about the game the better, full on grumpy old man mode I’m afraid. Thought we were the better team in the first half but just couldn’t get the final ball right, when we did, we lacked quality in front of goal. Second half, we battled well , but lacked any consistent quality when in possession of the ball. Finishing was abysmal and thankfully, Lee pulled off a couple of decent saves to keep us in front.”

Philpott commented after the game… “Deffo a game where the result was better than the performance, but one in which the resolute defence saw us home.”

Drane concluded… “It was Mondays first game in a while and it showed but enough glimpses to nick us the points.”

Orozco summed the game by adding… They are a nice bunch of lads, and great ref as well. A win is a win.”

MOM: Neil (by a country mile)

Nailsea Vets 50s vs Russell Athletic 50s

Game on …… after a brief pitch inspection to ensure the frost hadn’t created an ice rink on the artificial surface at Nailsea School. The conditions meant that the ball zipped around and challenged both teams to ensure their passing was accurate.

Nailsea started brightly and dominated possession for much of the first half but didn’t put a single effort on target.

Russell were superb in defense, well organised, and giving little away. Half time looked to be heading for 0-0 until a Russell attack against the run of play found an unmarked player on the edge of the 18 yard box for him to fire into the roof of the net. Half time 0-1 to Russell.

The second half was similar in terms of possession. Nailsea were chasing hard for an equalizer but again lacked the necessary finish. With 10 minutes remaining Nailsea began to press higher up the pitch and a long clearance from Russell bounced awkwardly for the lone Nailsea center-half who couldn’t quite put enough on a header back to the keeper leaving the Russell striker a simple finish to make it 2-0.

Finally, Nailsea converted! Nelly delivered a telling cross from the right and Alex glanced in from close range. 3 minutes remained and with Nailsea looking for a highly unlikely last minute equalizer they were caught on the break again as Russell struck a 3rd in the final seconds.

Nailsea removed one player from the pitch for a 10-minute cool-off following an exchange of verbals but otherwise, the game was played in a very good spirit. Congratulations to Russell for a well-deserved victory after a battling performance.

Easton Monday 95 vs Nailsea Vets 50s

Best grass pitch we’ve played on in quite a while so it deserved to have top-quality football played on it. That came in patches in a well-fought game between two reasonably even teams although Easton’s quality on the ball and accurate long-range passing gave them the edge.

Easton started the brighter and it was 15 minutes before Nailsea began to find some rhythm and share some controlled periods of play. Easton calved out a few chances, but Nailsea took the lead after half an hour. Lee Cogan picked up the ball on the left-hand edge of the penalty area and fired a shot low into the left side of the goal. Easton responded by pressing high up the pitch and made their dominant possession pay off with 2 goals in the last 10 minutes of the first half.

Both teams squandered chances in the second half and the score remained unchanged. Lee McGreevy kept Nailsea in the game with a great save as Easton were through 1 on 1 and in the last seconds Nailsea had a great chance to level but fired over from close range.

Nailsea felt they did enough for a point but Easton probably felt they deserved the win on the balance of play and the number of chances that went begging.

Played in an excellent spirit with no incidents to report which is also a testament to a very good referee who was keen to play the advantage whenever he could and bring a level of good humour to the proceedings.

THE ‘MONDAY POST’ MATCH REPORT

For the second game in a row Monday were able to field another strong squad as the teams arrived at the pristine grass pitch on a cold but crisp Sunday morning. However, the 95ers started poorly, unable to keep hold of the ball allowing Nailsea to put them under pressure from the off and finding a lot of space. Monday then began to pass the ball around nicely without really bothering the Nailsea keeper.

A couple of wayward passes from Bri, and then Terry gave Nailsea an opportunity that they finished very nicely into the bottom corner to make it 1-0 to the visitors. As Bri observed… “This served as the kick up the backside the Monday needed, this and the introduction of Dr Rob to the wing saw chances starting to be made.”

Dr Rob was bought on to add a bit of extra pace down the right and the sub had an immediate impact when he hit a great cross to the back post where Drane was waiting in front of an open goal. Unable to decide which foot to use, Drane tripped over himself, fluffed the chance and was left burying his face in his hands. A theme that would be repeated several times throughout the game.

It wasn’t long before Dr Rob pinged in another inch perfect cross which Morgs met perfectly to head the ball home. 1-1. Minutes later the 95ers put together a nice move down the left and Morgs did the rest, beating a defender and a very smart finish into the bottom right corner 2-1 at half time.

Monday rotated the team and started the second half on the front foot. Sheri made a welcome return from injury and was quickly put clean through with only the keeper to beat, the crowd held its breath, but the Nailsea keeper saved his shot. The Blues needed the 3rd goal to settle the nerves and the game. This period saw numerous Monday chances to kill the game but contrived to fail to provide finishing to match their good build up play.

It was definitely not one-way traffic though. Nailsea have decent footballers throughout the team and caused problems with Monday keeper Sir Lee coming to the rescue a few times with some quality keeping, twice tipping the ball over the bar.

With 10 minutes to go Colonel came on for Sheri and had a golden chance to seal it with his first touch after a defensive slip saw him clean through with just the keeper to beat, as he explained to the press conference after the match… “I took a touch to set up the shot, which I mentally lined up for the top left corner only to see the Nailsea keeper pull off another fine save.” This observation of events was somewhat contradicted by Stu Charlton who told reporters… “Colonel just passed it back to the keeper!”…something Stu knows all about.

The game was becoming stretched as Nailsea piled players forward for the equaliser and missed an open goal from a break.

The 95ers did likewise when Duds put Morgs clean through, with only the keeper to beat his shot flew over the bar landing in Row Z when he had loads of time, space and Rob and Colonel screaming for him to square the ball.

Monday dropped deeper and deeper allowing Nailsea to pile on the pressure resulting in a couple of nervy free kicks and half chances. But the 95ers hung on for a big 3 points.

Sheri summed up the game at his press conference… “We weren’t at our best but a win is a win and 3 points. Overall, a proper competitive and enjoyable 50’s game played in the right spirit.”

The sentiment was echoed by Alex telling reporters… “Overall, a decent opposition that gave us a fair, Corinthian game. Could’ve been an horrendously arduous game if it wasn’t for the great pitch and referee.”

MOM: Yinka for overall display with Dr Rob not far behind and Morgs 3rd for his two well taken goals.
