Red Star 50s vs Nailsea Vets 50s

Red Star started brightly with a goal in the first 2 minutes. Nailsea lost possession in midfield and Red Star found their striker inside the box to drill home from 10 yards out. Not the best of starts but Nailsea regrouped and began to play some of the best football we’ve enjoyed for a long time. Nailsea dominance was soon rewarded. After 30 minutes Lee Cogan hit a looping cross / come shot from a narrow-angle on the left over the keepers head into the right side of the net. As Nailsea continued to dominate at least 4 golden opportunities went begging. Red Star struck against the run of play on the stroke of half time with a counterattack to make it 2-1.

Nailsea continued the second half in a similar fashion with a terrific display of neat passing to open up further chances. Red Star’s keeper was outstanding with two notable saves; one in particular that defied belief (a reminder of Jimmy Montgomery from the ’73 FA Cup final!) Once again, Nailsea’s dominance eventually paid dividends and an equalizer came on 80 minutes as Stu Kemble powered in a header from 6 yards out from a recycled corner.

In the last minute, Nailsea thought they’d nicked the win with a close-range shot from Lee Cogan that hit the post but it wasn’t to be. Final score 2-2. Nailsea were pleased to earn a point after a very good display but went away to consider what may have been had so many chances not gone begging.

Nailsea withdrew 1 player for 20 minutes to calm down following an altercation, after which the game continued to be played in a competitive but Corinthian spirit

Sherston Vets vs Reclinosaurs

 

The 2023-24 season returned, with Sherston Town Vets hosting Reclinosaurs on a very warm and wet September morning. Sherston started with some good passing football, working the ball up the pitch for early chances and finding themselves 3-0 up in the first 25mins having pounced on some loose balls in the box. Reclinosaurs fought back and brought it back to 3-1 with an excellent run and finish from #7.  Another Sherston goal made it 4-1 at the break.

The second half was a closer affair, but two quick goals from Sherston put them in control at 6-1. Then the crowd were treated to a 35 yard own goal from Sherstons player-manager, finding the bottom corner of the net with his misplaced back pass.

Time for one more goal, for the game to finish 7-2.

Reclinosaurs report:

Sherston were a cut above today, playing some superb pass and move football with a couple of outstanding individuals making everything tick for them. After a 7-1 mauling here last season, we expected a tough morning, but this Sherston side was a much slicker outfit and the aging Reclinosaurs did well to keep the score below cricket levels after an appalling first 20 minutes. Game played in excellent spirit with a very good referee and wounds salved by a couple of pints at the Rattlebone after. Good luck for the season!

Bury Legends vs Chew Magna 45s

On a very hot day Chew ran out deserved winners!

Chew had a lot of the ball in the first half and dominated midfield but for the most part failed to take advantage of their possession until Worgan drilled home after some good wing play down the righthand side.

Bury, playing more direct football, had several chances to equalise before they finally drew level from the penalty spot, Nigel Lush converting after Rob Sharp was brought down by the Chew keeper!

Chew took the lead midway through the second half with an absolute worldy from Langson, driving the ball into the top corner from 25 yards!!

After that Bury tired and Chew dominated and could have scored more before Fisher prodded home from close range to seal the victory.
